The Otsby and Barton company has a tragic history. It was founded in 1879 by Engelhart Cornelius Ostby and Nathan B. Barton. In 1912, Englehart Ostby died when the Titanic sank. His daughter, Helene, accompanied him on the trip and she survived having been boarded onto a lifeboat. This association with this famous event makes Otsby and Barton jewelry more desirable to collectors. The company continued after Engelharts death until the 1950s.
